                                   PEDRO FIGARI - INDEX

It is costumary for painters to have “catalogues raisonnés” dedicated to their works. It hasn’t been my aim so far, concerning Figari, having concentrated my efforts in the archive. Still, the sources for a catalogue or an archive are always the same: good photos and as many references as possible.

Now that the process of the archive is well advanced, I’ll try and satisfy what collectors, gallerists, auctioneers have always said they wanted. For the time being, I’ve put aside the idea of a “catalogue raisoné”, and focused on a first volume of an index that doesn’t pretend further than establishing the existence of the paintings included.

Many paintings reach the necessary standards, like having been in my hands and being represented by good photo material, but in the other extreme, of some pictures I believe do deserve to be accounted for, I only have a bad print. I still have to decide where I want the limit to be.

The effect of the first volume should be that when an included painting is not wholely documented, the right material is provided to me, just as if due to a fake there are two versions of the same picture, the matter can be set straight, as has already happened thanks to the archive. I also hope it will motivate those who haven’t done it sooner, to provide me with documents for further volumes. There will be evident benefits for everybody involved.

I am not sure of the exact time that I’ll start the printing process, but I believe it is when I estimate that I have enough photo material to make the enterpirse worthwhile, and I am now concentrating on that estimation. The search job, I have been at  so far, and I am certainly not satisfied, but in spite of shortcomings it has been very rewarding.
